A washer door normally stays locked while the machine detects water, motion, or an active cycle. It may remain locked because the cycle did not finish, the washer did not drain, the lock assembly failed, or a sensor or control is reporting an unsafe condition.
Common possible causes
A symptom can have more than one cause. These are common possibilities—not a diagnosis of your specific appliance.
- Water remains in the drum after a drain problem
- A paused or interrupted cycle has not reset
- Door-lock assembly or wiring fault
- Pressure sensor, pump, or control problem
Safe basic checks
Use only checks that do not require removing panels, touching wiring, or working with gas or internal refrigeration components.
- Wait several minutes after the cycle ends for the lock to release.
- Use the cancel or drain function once according to the owner manual.
- Check whether water is visibly remaining in the drum.
- Turn off the appliance if it displays an error or begins leaking.
When to call an appliance technician
Request service if the door remains locked after the machine has drained and reset. Do not force the door or open panels, especially when water remains inside.
