Why Is My Refrigerator Leaking Water?

Where refrigerator water leaks can originate, safe observations to make, and when to schedule refrigerator repair.

SHORT ANSWER

Refrigerator water can come from a drain restriction, ice-maker or dispenser tubing, a filter or housing, condensation, a door-sealing problem, or an external supply connection. The location and timing of the leak are important diagnostic clues.

Common possible causes

A symptom can have more than one cause. These are common possibilities—not a diagnosis of your specific appliance.

  • Defrost drain restricted or frozen
  • Filter, housing, reservoir, or internal tubing leak
  • Ice maker or dispenser component problem
  • Condensation caused by warm air entering the cabinet

Safe basic checks

Use only checks that do not require removing panels, touching wiring, or working with gas or internal refrigeration components.

  1. Dry the floor to reduce slip and property-damage risk.
  2. Note whether the leak appears during ice making, dispensing, or defrosting.
  3. Check that doors close fully and the filter is seated as the owner manual describes.
  4. If safe and accessible, close the appliance water-supply valve when leaking continues.

When to call an appliance technician

Request service for a recurring leak, water near electrical parts, ice buildup, or a leak whose source is not clearly external. Building plumbing work is outside appliance repair scope.
