A dryer can tumble without heating because of a cycle setting, restricted airflow, a power-supply issue, a heater or ignition component failure, a sensor problem, or a control fault. Gas and electric models use different heating systems and require model-specific diagnosis.
Common possible causes
A symptom can have more than one cause. These are common possibilities—not a diagnosis of your specific appliance.
- Air-only, eco, or low-heat cycle selected
- Restricted lint screen or exhaust airflow
- Heating element, igniter, valve, thermostat, or sensor problem
- Power or appliance-control fault
Safe basic checks
Use only checks that do not require removing panels, touching wiring, or working with gas or internal refrigeration components.
- Confirm the selected cycle is intended to produce heat.
- Clean the lint screen and make sure it is installed correctly.
- Check whether airflow at the exterior outlet seems unusually weak without disassembling the vent.
- Stop immediately if you smell gas or burning.
When to call an appliance technician
Request service when the drum turns but heat does not return, a breaker repeatedly trips, or the dryer smells unusual. Gas-supply and building-electrical work require the appropriate utility or licensed trade.
